Mirissa Chillin’ & Weligama Surfin’

Having been in so many surfer places around the world, it’s quite astonishing we never found the time (or guts 🙂 ) to try it out ourselves. We planned well ahead to go to Weligama, one of the world’s best beaches for surfing lessons. No excuses this time. We’ll try to catch those waves! Just a 10 minute drive from this surfing beach is Mirissa, one of the busiest and also hip places you’ll find on the Southern coast. The Mirissa beach is beautiful and there are many things to do in the area.

SURFING IN WELIGAMA

Ziga got super excited when we hit Weligama beach on the first day. There were tons of surfers out there but I was quite hesitant when I saw those big waves crashing down. This didn’t feel beginner at all! There are many surfer shops there and prices range between 15-20 EUR for a 2-hour course for 2. Definitely a great price compared to other places around the world.

I’m happy that I managed to overcome my initial fear, as riding my first waves felt incredible. It seems so much easier when you look at other surfers or when you’re practicing your stance on the ground, so getting up was quite a challenge but really worth the effort! We’ll try to catch some more waves in the following weeks and will let you know how we’re doing.

MIRISSA BEACH LIFE

Mirissa is definitely among the highlights of our trip. It kinda felt like the Bali of Sri Lanka – chillout places, juice bars, several yoga and meditation centers and great vibes all around. Check out Shady Lane for smoothie bowls and avocado toasts.

For morning yoga with superb views of the ocean and delish breakfast, direct for Bonso Cafe – Azma and Sanjay are the nicest couple we’ve met and will spoil you rotten!

While in Mirissa you should definitely go and see the sunrise in Parrot rock to avoid the crowds coz the beach gets packed for the sunset. If you just need time to relax you can hit one of the many beaches in the area.

Mirissa beach is our favourite, but also make sure to find your way to the Secret beach. You need a scooter to get there or go with a tuk tuk, but it’s definitely worth it! There is also beach bar/restaurant so you can easily spend the whole day there.
