Ljubljana was recently chosen as Europe’s hidden gem and a #1 place you need to visit. And I will tell you why.
Welcome to Ljubljana! I am starting your tour with Prešeren square, cause nothing says welcome to Ljubljana more as this place does. It is the meeting point of friends who can not decide where to go next, potential lovers that are too shy to invite each other home or just a place where you can really feel Ljubljana’s spirit. So come, admire and feel Ljubljana!
f you haven’t picked a room to stay at yet, you can’t go wrong with choosing this city’s pearl – Hotel Vander. It is a beautiful boutique hotel with great food and a rooftop pool with a bar, where occasionally some events are organized. Even if you pick another hotel, you can still come everyday after 7 PM and relax overlooking the most amazing view of Ljubljana’s city center and listen to some good music, sipping gin tonic.
Right in the heart of the city center in pedestrian area – on the banks of Ljubljanica river, you will find countless bars, colorful old houses, boutique hotels and friendliest people in central Europe. It is probably the most crowded place as it is truly astonishing and it is probably already in your itinerary.
Next stop is Farmer’s market. Colors and smells. Delicious fruits and hundreds of fresh herbs. Freshly baked breads and roasted nuts. Green veggies. Need I say more? If you like homegrown veggies and fruits, you shouldn’t miss Ljubljana’s farmers’ market.
Also, every Friday from March to November, there is a food market, where all the greatest restaurants, wineries and bars present their food and it’s the best place to meet with friends after the busy workweeks, try out the foods and drink a good glass of wine. Slovenians do know how to enjoy the little things!
Ljubljana has been selected as the European Green capital of 2016. Why? 70% of Slovenia is covered by forest and Ljubljana isn’t an exception. However, it is not covered by forest in such a high percentage, as green areas dominate the town.
My favorite green spot is in Park Tivoli as in the first picture. It is also no secret that Ljubljaners love to spend time outdoors so it’s no surprise they have established several outdoor libraries. So if you are around in the summer, come around, pick up a book, lie down and enjoy.
If bad weather catches you, there are two botanical gardens in the town and if you’re into trees and flowers – that’s your place to be.
During the summer when the temperatures might rise up to 35 degrees C, you can cool down by the small lake – Koseški bajer, reachable by the city bus which takes only 10 minutes from the city center.
If there are any of dog owners visiting ljubljana, there’s a tip for you. Or if you’re just a dog lover, I have good news for you too. 🙂 This cute doggy on the pictures is my beloved Ava and as I love to travel, I also love to take her with me. Ljubljana is the town that dog owners adore – dogs friendly town. You can take your paw friend to all public areas, bars and restaurants, even to bakeries. So, welcome furry balls!
When in Slovenia, also make sure to visit other places such the Slovenian Alps, the Postojna caves, the Slovenian coast or the one of the wine regions.
