3 days in Athens

I have visited Greece fairly more than 10 times, explored numerous beautiful islands and continental spots, yet Athens have remained undiscovered for me.. until now! As I am a history enthusiast and Greek is my favorite, this trip has been a dream come true. We visited in November and enjoyed perfect weather, around 20 degrees C and no summer crowds that could spoil the magical sights.

Walking the streets of Athens felt like walking in an open air museum as every corner in the center of the city offers tiny temples, ruins or old statues. Cultural and social life is gathered around and in ancient landmarks.

Use metro to get from the airport to the city center, where no car or scooter is needed as I suggest you walk all those beautiful street to get the real vibe of Athens. If you want to visit some of the southern temples, Uber runs pretty cheap there.

The magnificent Acropolis

Acropolis is visible from almost every part of the city and reminds Greeks daily of their heritage and the city’s many transformations.

Head there in the morning when it opens to public at 8 AM, to avoid the crowds and get yourself alone picture with the most important ancient site in the Western world, crowned by the Parthenon. We paid 10EUR per person for the entrance, but it’s 20EUR in the peak season. It gives you access to the main ancient sighs including Acropolis, Temple of Athena Nike, the Propylaia, Erechtheion, and Theatre od Dionysus.

Eat and drink in Plaka

The liveliest neighborhood in Athens lies in the shadow of the Acropolis. It is like a city within the city know for its colors and vibe and it feels like being in one of the Greek islands. It is the oldest part of the Athens and most streets are closed to traffic and you should definitely walk every street of it. Do not miss out on Anafiotika, as it’s my fav part of this neighborhood.

Stay in the central area

I could not suggest more to stay in the center or close proximity as all the pretty spots are concentrated right in the center, which is also a home to numerous hotels that offer pretty rooftops with views of Acropolis. We stayed at Phillippos and Herodion that are actually sister hotels and both lie a few steps away from the Acropolis. The latter offers a rooftop jacuzzi overlooking the Acropolis and a delish restaurant Atrium. Herodion is more luxurious but Philippos spoiled us with the huge room terrace with best views. Perfect location of these boutique hotels and great price performance are making both an easy choice. Enjoy!

Rooftop drinks

Athens offer amazing views of the sunset as the sun drowns to the sea and the hills are wonderfully lighted. Add acropolis view and you’ve got yourself a view you will never forget. Oh and celebrated with a glass of a good Greek wine! Cheers! 😉
